Visual training has been used for centuries to treat blurred vision and other problems (such as academic achievement). In the early days, visual training was typically used in infants and was mainly to place bright objects strategically around the infant to encourage them to look in certain directions. However, it was not necessarily used for health reasons. In some cultures, where squinting was considered a sign of beauty, bright spots were drawn on the forehead of the children to encourage them to squint!
Ophthalmic visual education officially began in 1928, when a branch of ophthalmology known as orthoptics was first recognized in the UK. Since then, visual training is mainly practiced by optometrists. The eye exercises that are currently associated with visual training have evolved considerably since their inception.
